This is a custom that dates back to ancient times. On the last night of the carnival, people in Western Macedonia light huge campfires in the middle of the town’s/village’s square in order to send away evil spirits. There is traditional music, dance, lots of food and wine and the festivities, which are open not just to locals, but also to visitors, last till early the following morning. A custom worth experiencing!
